On April 11, 2018, a tragic incident occurred involving an Algerian Air Force Ilyushin Il-76 aircraft. Shortly after takeoff from Boufarik Airport, located near Boufarik, Algeria, the aircraft crashed. Eyewitnesses reported that the plane went down shortly after its departure. The Boufarik Airport, with the ICAO code DAAK, is known as a military airport and houses various aircraft types including Beechcraft 1900, EADS CASA C-295, Lockheed C-130 Hercules, and the Ilyushin Il-76.

Initially, media reports suggested that over 100 passengers were feared dead. However, this number was later revised to a total of 257 victims, which included 247 passengers and 10 crew members. The aircraft was reportedly en route to Béchar when the crash occurred.

This incident marked a somber day in the history of the Algerian Air Force and the country as a whole. It's also worth noting that the Ilyushin IL-76, a Russian medium airlifter developed during the Soviet era in the 1960s, has a history of involvement in accidents. Since its service commencement in 1971, the IL-76 has been involved in 79 crashes, resulting in a total of 875 casualties.
