Airplane Clips a Tree During Emergency Landing on the Street

In Clearwater, Florida, a small airplane incident ended surprisingly well as two men emerged unharmed after their aircraft clipped a tree and spun around during an emergency landing attempt on Keene Road.

The pilot, Marc Benedict, aged 61, and his passenger, Gregory Guinee, aged 55, both residents of Clearwater, miraculously escaped injury when their single-engine, four-seat Rockwell Commander 112 crashed around 10:25 a.m. on a Sunday morning, near the intersection of Keene Road and Sunset Point Road.

The mishap unfolded when Benedict encountered engine trouble while returning to Clearwater Air Park from Zephyrhills Municipal Airport. According to DiFrancesco, he had departed from Clearwater around 9 a.m. and began his return trip at approximately 10 a.m.

As the aircraft was flying southwest over the "On Top of the World," a 55-plus community in Clearwater, Benedict reported engine trouble and attempted an emergency landing on Keene Road.

Unfortunately, during the landing attempt, the left wing of the plane struck a tree located in the median of the road, causing the aircraft to spin around before coming to a halt on a nearby sidewalk.

An investigation into the incident is currently underway. Local deputies reported that there was no indication of impairment involved in the incident. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is slated to take over the probe to determine the precise cause of the accident.

As a result of the incident, Keene Road was expected to remain blocked until the plane could be safely towed away.

Wayne Owens, a 49-year-old resident, was a witness to the crash as he heard the impact from his house on Bentley Street, located just one house away from where the plane ultimately landed. Initially mistaking it for a car collision, Owens soon realized the severity of the situation upon seeing the downed tree and the damaged plane. He expressed his unease, noting that he was unaware of the proximity of his residence to the airport's flight path until after moving in.
