Air France Flight 066 Suffers Uncontained Engine Failure
Air France Flight 066, a scheduled international passenger flight from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport to Los Angeles International Airport, experienced a significant incident on September 30, 2017. During the flight, the aircraft suffered an uncontained engine failure while cruising and was forced to make an emergency landing at Goose Bay Airport in Canada. The incident involved the outboard right-side Engine Alliance GP7200 engine, which failed and lost its fan hub and intake approximately 150 kilometers southeast of Paamiut, Greenland. The failure was attributed to a crack in the fan hub caused by metal fatigue. At the time of the incident, the aircraft was carrying 497 passengers and 24 crew members. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries or fatalities among those on board. However, passengers were not allowed to disembark from the A380 until the next morning, as the airport was not equipped to accommodate a large number of international passengers from commercial aircraft. An investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety (BEA), the French aviation accident investigation bureau, with assistance from representatives of Airbus and Air France. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada was also involved, as the incident occurred in Canadian airspace. The investigation included a large search operation in Greenland to recover missing parts of the engine, particularly the fan hub fragments. The recovery of these parts was crucial for supporting the investigation. The search and recovery campaign for the missing fan hub took almost two years, involving multiple search campaigns using different technologies. The BEA released its final report in September 2020, indicating that the engine failed due to a crack in the Ti-6-4 alloy fan hub caused by cold dwell fatigue cracking. |

Debris from an Air France jet engine that failed on a transatlantic flight last week has been located in a remote part of Greenland, investigators say. Recorded data from the Paris-Los Angeles flight pinpointed the position where the damage occurred. A Danish helicopter spotted the engine parts on an icy desert area 150km (95 miles) south-east of Paamiut town. Part of the Airbus A380's engine fell off on Saturday, forcing the flight to divert to Labrador in Canada. The plane was carrying 496 passengers and 24 crew at the time. No-one was injured in the incident. French air investigators said they were working with their Danish counterparts to organise the recovery of the parts. Meanwhile the French investigators will continue to examine the flight recorder data. |
