3 Killed when a Diamond DA42 Twin Star Training Aircraft Crashed into a Field

Three people were killed on Thursday when a twin-engine aircraft crashed into a rice field in Thailand’s central Kanchanaburi Province.

Thailand, a small DA42 training aircraft, operated by the International Aviation College Nakhon Phanom, crashed in the Muang district after the pilot reported that the plane’s engine was on fire.

No fire on impact. Hmmmm. Looks like a back breaker landing for sure. Great post.

Considering the good condition of the cabin area (The windshield is not even cracked) and the lack of fire, I wonder why they died. Did it just pancake into the ground?

Look like you are right. I have 100 hours in Da40's nice planes but they never felt like they could take as much or a beating as cessnas.

Re: 3 Killed when a Diamond DA42 Twin Star Training Aircraft Crashed into a Field

Landing gear is down and flaps look like they are fully down or close to it. That's the landing configuration. One of the blades on the left engine is still intact, which probably indicates that it wasn't running when the plan hit the ground. All major parts of the airplane are accounted for at the immediate crash site, which indicates very little forward momentum at impact.

My guess is that they were close to landing, got too slow (below Vmc) and the left engine failed. Or the engine failed and the pilot mishandled the emergency. Regardless, the result was the classic stall/spin accident.

It reminds me of the quip about piston twins: In the event an engine fails, the other engine will take you straight to the crash site...
