10 Dead, 3 Injured in Piper PA-42 Cheyenne Aircraft Accident
A small Piper PA-42 Cheyenne aircraft (PR-NDN) carrying 10 people crashed this morning shortly after taking off from Canela Airport and ended up colliding with a store, a house and an inn in the popular tourist city of Gramado, in the mountains of Rio Grande do Sul, a region that at the time of the accident had reduced visibility due to heavy rain and dense fog. According to the local Civil Defense, the accident left 10 dead (local media reports children) and 3 injured. About 12 people were taken to nearby hospitals for smoke inhalation. The exact location of the fall is on Avenida das Hortências (near number 220) which connects Gramado and Canela, the two main tourist cities in the Serra Gaúcha, especially busy during the Christmas period. The aircraft superficially hit the top of a building, the second floor of a house and a store, while its debris hit a nearby guesthouse. Images from airport cameras and aircraft data indicate that the plane took off at around 9:12 a.m. and entered a downward trajectory about a minute later, while still making a right turn. Its final destination was Jundiaí, in the interior of São Paulo. |

Re: 10 Dead, 3 Injured in Piper PA-42 Cheyenne Aircraft Accident
Piper Cheyenne only seats eight people including the pilot and a passenger seated in the co-pilot seat. Possibly some children in there which are allowed to sit in the lap if they're under 2 years old. Just based on the number of people and the fact they didn't get very far I'm going to make an assumption they were overloaded.

Maximum seating capacity depends on configuration of the particular aircraft. Maximum capacity of the aircraft overall is 9 pax + 1 pilot. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piper_PA-42_Cheyenne |

Well honk my hooter. must be stuffed in their like sardines. Cheyenne people are a weird bunch. They will tell anyone in earshot about how their plane out-performs the KingAir and is better in so many regards. But side by side the king air is much larger inside. |
