1 Killed when 2 Helicopters Collide Mid-air Above Helipad on Mount Everest
Today, Tuesday around 8:11 a.m. local time a fatal mid-air collision involving 2 helicopters occurred in Pheriche village (located at an altitude of 13,780 feet / 4,200 meters, just below Mount Everest's base camp. The collision involved an Air Dynasty helicopter carrying cargo and a Fishtail Air helicopter that was carrying tourists rescued from the Everest region. The aircraft collided while attempting to land at the Pheriche helipad. Balaramaramadu, 47 years old, an Indian national who was traveling as a passenger aboard the Fishtail Air helicopter died. Shailesh Krishna Patel, 49, an Indian-origin resident of New Zealand who was a passenger on the Fishtail Air helicopter got injured and was airlifted to Mediciti Hospital in Kathmandu. Captain Rabindra Prajapati, the Nepali pilot of the Fishtail Air helicopter also got injured and airlifted to Kathmandu Hospital. Captain Prajwal KC, the Nepali pilot of the Air Dynasty helicopter also got injured and was airlifted to Kathmandu Hospital. Initial reports confirm the disaster was a mid-air collision during a synchronized landing attempt at a highly trafficked altitude where flight navigation is notoriously difficult due to extreme mountain weather and a lack of ground infrastructure. Both Captain Rabindra Prajapati and Captain Prajwal KC are considered highly experienced, veteran commercial pilots within Nepal’s specialized high-altitude aviation sector. |
