A young woman has been left bloody and traumatized after she was attacked by an aggressive butcher bird.

Amber Bitzer, 25, was in the backyard of her share house in Bardon, in Brisbane's west, at 1pm on October 10 when the bird took aim at her head.

Related to magpies, butcher birds are ruthless killers that impale smaller birds, reptiles and rats on sharp twigs, thorns or wire while they rip them apart.

'My friend and I were looking for a pleasant spot in my backyard to lay down and read for the afternoon.'

When her friend popped inside for a moment, the butcher bird struck.

'She heard my screams and came out to find me with blood streaming from my forehead,' While the gash below her hairline was treated by a doctor, Ms Bitzer said she had never been swooped before and is now terrified to enter the garden.

'I feel like... it's not my backyard anymore.'

That bird in the last photo looks more like a Logger Head Shrike by the markings. They too, are also known to impale their prey due to the lack of talons.

She must either be too close to a nesting spot or a horrible person.

Yesterday, one of the housemates went out there for the first time since my attack to hang up her washing, and she did get swooped. But she did it wearing a bicycle helmet and sunglasses.

We can add this animal to a long list of dangerous animals that can attack humans in AUS.

I was attacked by a Common Tern two years back, in summer of 2021. Luckily she only managed to shit on my shoulder but god damn I almost peed my pants. The tern was nesting on a flat roofed business complex building, which was in a pretty busy area. Poor Mommy Tern had so much potential threats to defend her offspring from, I hope she didn't develop a peptic ulcer by the end of the nesting season

Fortunately, they’re also not especially bright. If you accidentally end up near their nesting grounds, or have no choice but to traverse them, you can usually psyche them out by lifting something above your head, such as a stick, which they will attack instead of you.

I was dive bombed in the woods by a ruffed grouse. I wished I had my trusty 14 gauge with me. I felt rather foolish, but the only way to keep him at bay was to jog out of his territory.
