My uncle (on my father's side) joined the SS in Croatia (Ustashe). He never served in any of the camps, but still had to walk the "walk of shame" through the city along with the other officers and be publicly humiliated. I just think it's sad that a normal young man was to be humiliated for crimes he didn't commit; as a low ranking officer he had no idea about what was going on it the camps, and from what my father has told me his brother only joined because he wanted to restore the family's former glory (old knights the lot of them, but spent all their loots on whore's and booze so the family was really poor). There weren't really anyone who told the poor, uneducated youth that getting permanent glory and "serving your country" involved genocide. |
