Re: WWII - Holocaust - jewish ghettos

Lviv/lvov (Polish: Lwów is a major city in western Ukraine.

n 1939 the second world war once again brought changes of governance and as a result of the joint German-Soviet-Slovak invasion of Poland, Lviv was annexed by the Soviet Union on 17 September 1939 and was part of the Ukrainian SSR for two years. There were several years of German occupation, from June 1941 to July 1944, but it was recaptured by the Soviet Red Army on 26 July 1944 and returned to the Ukrainian SSR. After World War II Poland's borders were relocated west of the area and the city and region was again part of Ukraine under the rule of the Soviet Union.

Re: WWII - Holocaust - jewish ghettos

During World War II, Inowrocław was captured by the German army on September 11, 1939 and became part of the German military district (Militärbezirk) of Posen and was renamed Hohensalza. The city was incorporated into the German Reich on November 26, 1939, initially part of Reichsgau Posen (1939), and later Reichsgau Wartheland (1939-1945). German forces were defeated by the Red Army in January 1945 and the city was returned to Poland.

Re: WWII - Holocaust - jewish ghettos

Kremenets (Ukrainian: Кременець, translit. Kremenets’ Polish: Krzemieniec) is a city in the Ternopil Oblast (province) of western Ukraine. It is the administrative center of the Kremenetsky Raion (district), and rests 18 km north-east of the great Pochayiv Monastery. The city is situated in the historic region of Volhynia.

On Tuesday, September 12, 1939, Krzemieniec was bombed by the Luftwaffe. The Germans attacked the town, because it was one of stops of the Polish government in its retreat from Warsaw to Romania. The bombing was witnessed by Anthony Joseph Drexel Biddle, U.S. ambassador to Poland, who wrote in his report that it happened at 10:50 am. The Germans dropped bombs and then massacred civilians with machine guns, mounted on their aircraft. 31 persons were killed, 77 wounded and 27 buildings destroyed.

In the fall of 1939, Krzemieniec was annexed by USSR and became part of the Ukrainian SSR. The city played an active role in the Soviet partisan movement and was liberated from Nazi Germany in 1944. Since then it has grown and was the regional centre of the rayon.

Re: WWII - Holocaust - jewish ghettos

Lublin is the largest city in Poland east of the Vistula, and the capital of Lublin Voivodeship with a population of 355,954 (2004). It is Poland's ninth largest city.

The city served as a German headquarters for Operation Reinhardt, the main German effort to exterminate the Jews in occupied Poland. Lublin's Jewish population was forced into the Lublin ghetto established around the area of Podzamcze. The majority of the ghetto's inhabitants, about 26,000 people, was deported to the Bełżec death camp between 17 March and 11 April 1942. The remainder were moved to facilities around Majdanek, a large concentration camp established at the outskirts of the city. Most of them were killed by the war's end. After the war the few Jews who survived in hiding or by escaping to Soviet territory reestablished a small Jewish community in the city, but it quickly shrank to insignificance as most Jews left Poland for Israel and the West in the immediate postwar years. The Majdanek camp, together with the prison established in the Lublin castle, also served as a major centre of terror measures aimed at the non-Jewish population of Lublin and the surrounding district.

Re: WWII - Holocaust - jewish ghettos

Końskowola is a village in southeastern Poland, located between Puławy and Lublin, near Kurów, on the Kurówka River. It is the capital of a separate commune (gmina) within Puławy County and Lublin Voivodeship, called Gmina Końskowola. Population: 2,188 inhabitants (as of 2004).

With the onset of the Second World War, on September 15, 1939, Końskowola was taken by German troops and occupied. During the course of WWII, the Germans set up a POW camp and camps for slave labour in the town. The POW camp was soon liquidated, but a labour camp continued in operation through 1943. The inmates worked for Germans on farms, and on construction sites of roads and railroads.

A ghetto was established in the town, to which many groups of Jews were relocated, including Jews from Slovakia. On May 8, 1942, the Nazis conducted an Aktion in which many Jews were rounded up and transported to the Nazi extermination camp Sobibor. In October 1942, the ghetto' population was liquidated. In a massacre carried out by German troops: the Reserve Police Battalion 101, some 800-1000 Jews, among them women and children, were taken to a nearby forest and slaughtered. The ghetto's remaining inhabitants were transferred to another camp.
