WWII - Holocaust - Dachau Camp

Dachau was a Nazi German concentration camp, and the first one opened in Germany, located on the grounds of an abandoned munitions factory near the medieval town of Dachau, about 16 km (10 miles) northwest of Munich in the state of Bavaria which is located in southern Germany.

Opened in March 1933, it was the first regular concentration camp established by the coalition government of National Socialist (Nazi) NSDAP party and the German Nationalist People's party (dissolved on 6 July 1933). Heinrich Himmler, Chief of Police of Munich, officially described the camp as "the first concentration camp for political prisoners."

Dachau served as a prototype and model for the other Nazi concentration camps that followed. Almost every community in Germany had members taken away to these camps, and as early as 1935 there were jingles warning:

"Dear God, make me dumb, that I may not to Dachau come."

Its basic organization, camp layout as well as the plan for the buildings were developed by Kommandant Theodor Eicke and were applied to all later camps. He had a separate secure camp near the command center, which consisted of living quarters, administration, and army camps. Eicke himself became the chief inspector for all concentration camps, responsible for molding the others according to his model.

In total, over 200,000 prisoners from more than 30 countries were housed in Dachau of whom two-thirds were political prisoners and nearly one-third were Jews. 25,613 prisoners are believed to have died in the camp and almost another 10,000 in its subcamps, primarily from disease, malnutrition and suicide. In early 1945, there was a typhus epidemic in the camp followed by an evacuation, in which large numbers of the weaker prisoners died.

Together with the much larger Auschwitz, Dachau has come to symbolize the Nazi concentration camps to many people. Konzentrationslager (KZ) Dachau holds a significant place in public memory because it was the second camp to be liberated by British or American forces. Therefore, it was one of the first places where the West was exposed to the reality of Nazi brutality through firsthand journalist accounts and through newsreels

I've been researching for 10 in my spare time... You might be on about the Holocaust Hoax thread... I don't think anyone's actually said the Holocaust didn't happen on those posts... I personally said that the photographs don't prove there were any gas chambers - I haven't seen one yet that convinces me. Nobody was saying that the dead bodies were clever photo tricks - people obviously died from overwork, typhus, etc. The photo's just aren't proof of mass gassings. No amount of crematory ovens will convince me otherwise either - they needed some way of disposing of the dead didn't they? Doesn't prove that the dead were gassed. It's a huge subject and my particular posts were pertaining to the fact that the photos just show the grim realities of war - this is what happens when a bunch of people are stuck in camps where diseases are rampant and food supplies are mediocre at best. Basically, if there were gassings at the camps the argument is were they done on the scale that we are led to believe.

Magenta, I actually read those lines "the holocaust was NOT real" something about marxist propaganda etc. but I wasn't sure if it was in this forum or not, I like to read alot about the holocaust, is just hard to keep track what was read from where.
Sorry if I offended you.

You didn't offend me - I don't get offended very easily! There's two threads about the holocaust being a hoax - one just turned into an off topic kinda argument so I don't think it's being posted on at the moment... I don't remember reading the quote about it being Marxist propaganda on here... I could have missed it... Anyway, that wasn't something I personally said so I'm not sure but I know what you mean about losing track of what you've read where! I really confuse myself - hence a couple of reposts I've done. At least I haven't reposted myself yet! When that day comes I know I'm in trouble!!

Re: WWII - Holocaust - Dachau Camp

I've been to the Dachau Concentration Camp and there are gas chambers there. They were supposedly never used because Dachau was apparently not an extermination camp. Prisoners that were to be gassed were sent to other camps. But prisoners at Dachau claim that the gas chambers were used. According to records though, they were never used. Strange though, how they would take the time to make gas chambers, yet apparently never use them...

Strange though, how they would take the time to make gas chambers, yet apparently never use them...
zyklon gas was designed to delouse the clothes which the prisoners wore in the disease ridden camps. i'm pretty sure they did use the chambers for that in dachau
