Re: WWII - Holocaust - Belzec Extermination Camp

Yeah, I've only seen the one picture of the tree hanging... They have a massive version of it at the Auschwitz museum too... I'm sure I heard somebody say that's the only picture that was ever taken... It was a survivor - he said he was in the photo... I can't remember which documentary I heard that on - it was either "Auschwitz: The Nazi's and the Final Solution", the BBC documentary series or "Ravensbruck and Buchenwald" from the Yellow Star liberation series. A survivor who was at Auschwitz said he was subjected to hanging torture there - he was hung up from a hook in one of the beams in the punishment block - I think that's on "Auschwitz:The Nazi's and the Final Solution" and right after he said that they show you the picture of the tree hanging at Buchenwald. I've read somewhere on the internet that there are pictures of the hanging tortures used in the different camps but I've only come across that one Buchenwald one myself...

I found this info before while randomly browsing... Didn't know if you'd read it... I actually wasn't aware it was a recreation... Will have to get my investigating feet on!!

"The photo below was taken in the Museum at Dachau in May 2001. The photo, which is a recreation of the tree hanging punishment at Buchenwald, is not included in the new Museum at Dachau which opened in May 2003.

According to Harold Marcuse, Professor of History at the University of California at Santa Barbara, this scene was created in 1958 for an East German DEFA film, which is why the photo is no longer used. Reference: H. Obenaus, "Das Foto vom Baumhängen: Ein Bild geht um die Welt," in Stiftung Topographie des Terrors Berlin (ed.), Gedenkstätten-Rundbrief no. 68, Berlin, October 1995, pp. 3-8."

That was from Scrapbook pages - I know in another thread you said you'd got some of your pictures from there...
