Police in Poland have recovered the stolen metal sign that hung over the entrance to Auschwitz.

The “Arbeit macht frei” or “Work sets you free” iron motto had been cut into three pieces after being taken last Friday. Five people have been arrested.

Over a million and a half people, mainly Jews, perished in the Nazi death camp during World War Two.

Prisoners used to enter via the small iron gate, topped by words which came to symbolise Nazi efforts to deceive their victims into a false sense of security before murdering them.

The five men arrested for the theft of the infamous “Work makes you free” sign that hung over the entrance of the former Nazi death camp of Auschwitz, planned the scam to make money.

Polish police say the gang were not members of any neo-Nazi group.

The theft, which happened last Friday, sparked worldwide condemnation and the Polish authorities made its recovery a top priority.

As many a 1.1 million people were killed in the camp, 90 per cent of them were Jews.

On January the 27th, 1945, Soviet troops liberated Auschwitz.

Since then the date has been recognised as International Holocaust Day.

Those Germans are a strange lot- they're extremely vigilant when it comes to spotting the disappearance of one little sign on a concentration camp gate, yet, apparently, they never noticed a thing when those 6 million Jews vanished....

The Auschwitz museum in Poland is filthy rich... Maybe the one who stole the sign did that in order to press money from it? I see a satirical aspect here: The saying "Arbeit macht frei" = "Work sets you free" can be targeted to the millionaires who run that "atrocity amusement park" as well, cant it?

BBB: Auschwitz is in Poland. I don't think the Germans gave two shits about the sign being stolen, really lol

Ent: Maybe they stole the sign to extort money... but they immediately ruined the value by cutting it into three pieces. I think they probably stole it to a.) sell it to nostalgic WWII memorabilia fanatics, or b.) just because. Either way, there's no way they could have sold it without being found out lol It's definitely one of a kind! And well, I suppose there's some irony in it... but I don't think the thieves had that advanced of a mindset.
