Willamette Meteorite at AMNH and Other Notable Meteorites

The 15.5-ton Willamette Meteorite is a IIIAB iron meteorite displayed in the American Museum of Natural History's Rose Center Hall of the Universe. It is the largest meteorite found in the United States. No impact crater has been found. Settlers knew of it near West Linn, Oregon, by 1902, and the museum has held it since 1906. The meteorite, called Tomanowos, is sacred to tribes of the Willamette Valley.

Other featured specimens include Hoba, the largest known meteorite at about 60,000 kilograms, near Grootfontein, Namibia; the Cape York meteorites Ahnighito, Woman and Dog; the Allende carbonaceous chondrite, which fell in Chihuahua on February 8, 1969; and ALH84001, a Martian meteorite found in 1984. The group also includes a Canyon Diablo iron fragment, a slice of the Fukang pallasite, the Murchison meteorite that fell in Victoria, Australia, on September 28, 1969, and a Sikhote-Alin specimen from the February 12, 1947, fall in the Soviet Far East.

Re: Willamette Meteorite at AMNH and Other Notable Meteorites

Yes gutts all 3 are. The 3 iron masses were known to Inuit as;

Ahnighito (the Tent)- weighing 31 metric tons

The Woman- weighing 3 metric tons

The Dog- weighing 400 kg.

The pieces were sold for $40,000 to the American Museum of Natural History in New York City where they are still on display.

Re: Willamette Meteorite at AMNH and Other Notable Meteorites

Check out the Chicxulub crater. It's theorized that this is the crater left by the asteroid that may have killed off the dinosaurs.
