Whale Lice: Colony of Cyamid Amphipods on Whale Skin
A dense colony of several hundred whale lice occupies a V-shaped crevice in the whale's wet, mottled skin. Most are pink or salmon-colored, with several larger orange or amber-striped individuals among them. Whale lice are cyamid amphipods, a group of crustaceans rather than true lice or other insects. They spend their entire lives on whales, gathering in skin folds, wounds, blowhole areas and other crevices where they feed on skin. About 20 species are known, and most are associated with particular whale hosts.
