Kai Tak airport (also known as the Hong Kong International Airport) was the main international airport of Hong Kong for over 70 years until its closure in 1998. The only runway it had stretched out into the harbour, with a high density of buildings and mountains in close proximity, combined with tricky crosswinds, landing at Kai Tak was infamously difficult.

There is a big difference in the landing gear of a B-52 compaired to all the commercial aircraft. The B-52 landing gear greatly eases the problems posed by crosswind landings. Both the front and rear bogies can be set at angles of as much as 20° to either side of the straight-ahead position. In a crosswind landing, consequently, the aircraft can be headed directly into the wind while rolling down a runway not aligned with the wind.
