Vance Creek Bridge: 347-Foot Abandoned Rail Arch Built Near Shelton, 1928-29
Vance Creek Bridge is a steel open-spandrel railroad arch in the Satsop Hills near Shelton, Washington. The American Bridge Company built it in 1928-29 for the Simpson Logging Company railroad. Its deck stands 347 feet above Vance Creek, and the structure extends 827 feet with a 422-foot main span. It is the second-highest railroad arch in the United States, behind the nearby High Steel Bridge. The bridge carried logging trains toward Shelton before the line was abandoned. It was never open to the public, but it became a popular destination for trespassing photographers in the early 2010s. One view shows a person walking along the snow-covered plank deck in fog, while historical views show log trains crossing the arch. Green Diamond Resource Company installed barriers and surveillance in 2014 after graffiti and arson. The wooden deck and ties on the approach spans were removed in 2016 to deter further trespassing. |
