University of Minnesota's 2008 Decellularized and Reseeded Rat Hearts

Researchers at the University of Minnesota reported a bioartificial-heart experiment in Minneapolis on January 13, 2008. They perfused detergent through the coronary arteries of cadaveric rat hearts, removing the cells while preserving translucent extracellular-matrix scaffolds with their vessels, valves and chamber shapes intact.

The researchers reseeded the scaffolds with neonatal cardiac and endothelial cells and cultured them in a bioreactor. Contractions appeared after about four days, and by day eight the constructs pumped at about 2% of normal adult rat heart function. The work was a proof of concept in rats. The top row shows rat hearts becoming progressively pale and translucent during decellularization. The bottom row shows two reddish-brown reseeded hearts attached to cannulas.

Yah, it's too bad there's a moratorium on such beneficial research.

Interesting, I wonder if it will ever be successfully used on humans?

Re: University of Minnesota's 2008 Decellularized and Reseeded Rat Hearts

i wish they would legalize stem cell research it could help cure
some of the diseases but it probably will never be legalized
because diseases bring big business health treatments and
medicines keep doctors rich.
