Local resident Ünal Kozak recorded amateur footage of a dark shape moving across Lake Van in Van province, eastern Turkey, in 1997. He said it showed the Van Gölü Canavarı, or Lake Van Monster. The footage was broadcast in June 1997.

The recording shows a distant dark hump on gray water, followed by closer views of a dark brown form with a paler underside. No clear eye, head or source of the wake is visible. Skeptics have said the footage may conceal a boat and that the apparent breathing resembles air passing through a hose. No scientific evidence supports the existence of a large unknown creature in the lake.

Reports of a creature at Lake Van predate 1995, including a press account from 1889. Journalist Mehmet Çetingüleç later claimed that he and lawmaker Zeki Ergezen created the modern monster story in 1993 to attract attention to the lake's rising water level. That account remains his own claim.
