Frilled Shark (Chlamydoselachus anguineus)

This older than dirt shark has been dubbed the fossil shark because scientists believe it has not changed much since its beginning—which is a crying shame, because he is one ugly shark. The frill shark’s head resembles (yes, I’m going to say it) a penis. What a way to go through life. Perhaps that’s why he sticks to the bottom of the ocean and is rarely seen. Well, I for one say that the less we have to look at him--the better.

Oreo-dory (Pseudocyttus maculatus)

Found mostly in southern waters, this short fish stays on the bottom as well. This one is creepy as well as ugly. It looks like a fish you caught, and then cut its head off to feed to the cat—it has no discernable body. Its big budging eyes and lack of body make it look like a swimming head, so like I said, creepy and ugly.

Stonefish (Synanceia verrucosa)

This poisonous, chameleon type fish has a mug only a mother could love—and even that is a stretch. He is the deadliest fish in the ocean, and can change his looks to match his environment, which is usually a stone or coral like shape. If you ask me, it looks like a rotten potato with a bad case of acne—Yuk.

Black Swallower (Chiasmodon niger)

Also known as the great swallower, this ugly mutt can be found in all tropical waters. This fish gives new meaning to the words ‘double chin’. The Swallower has a huge pouch that hangs down from just below its chin to the bottom of its belly and can swallow another fish twice its size—now that’s a lot of swallowing! Personally, if I were another fish and saw its ugly mug coming towards me, I swim like hell and hightail it out of there.

Lamprey (Petromyzontidae)


Talk about a squiggly, icky, nasty bloodsucker, well here it is. The lamprey, which is similar to the eel, is identified by its tooth filled, funnel like mouth, with two squinting eyes on both sides of its gross head. These bloodsuckers have been known to attach themselves to other fish and bore a hole right through them—imagine how it would feel to have one of these little monsters boring through your stomach—yikes.

Long-nosed Chimaera (Rhinochimaeridae)


Cyrano de Bergerac has nothing on this fish. The long-nosed Chimaeras, also known as Rhinochimaeridae, have an unusually long paddle shaped snout. It lives in tropical seas and snouts (or paddles) his way around. It is a good thing fish do not have arms, because this fish would have trouble picking his nose.

Fangtooth (Anoplogaster cornuta)

With large, jagged, crooked fangs protruding from its mouth and a face riddled with mucus cavities, this little guy could win any ugly contest on earth. It is actually harmless to humans, though it supposedly has the largest teeth in the ocean. Of course, if you stare at him too long you might puke and choke to death so maybe it’s not that harmless after all.

Anglerfish (Melanocetus johnsonii)

The Anglerfish, with its loose skin atop of its head, has huge lips, spines, and bones sticking out everywhere, not to mention razor sharp teeth and what looks like antenna sticking out from between its eyes. This is one ugly monster. It swims around the bottom of the ocean waiting for its pray to play with its loose skin and then gobbles them up. I have played with many weird things in my time but I believe I will stay away from this one.

Goblin Shark (Mitsukurina owstoni)


The Goblin Shark, which looks like the alien from the movie ‘Alien’, is found in all oceans. It has a longer nose than any other shark in the oceans, and swims deeper. Discovered in the waters off Japan’s coast, this pink, freak of nature is definitely one ugly fish. It is without a doubt, the ugliest and scariest shark I have ever seen.

Blobfish (Psychrolutes marcidus)


Coming in at number one is the most disgusting and revolting creature on the face of the planet. This gelatinous mass of slime lives deeper than any other fish in the sea. Its density is slightly less than water as it sits at the bottom eating any crap that happens to float by. It looks like that disgusting slime I coughed up last time I had the flu. This fish is close to extinct, because believe or not, we’ve been eating it—gross.

it is a shame they didn't leave the frilled shark where it was. but no, they have to drag it out of its environment and it dies. no surprise.

first time i ever dived (cozumel, mexico) we saw a rock fish (aka stone fish) wasn't all that far from shore either.
