The Tragic Life of Steven Stayner

Little Steven Stayner was abducted from the Central California city and county of Merced, California at the age of 7 and held until he was 14 by Kenneth Eugene Pernell. The entire time, Steven was abused by Pernell, both sexually and psychologically.

His life was the subject of a tv movie called "I Know My First Name Is Steven."

Steven grew up thinking Pernell was his real father. He was given a new name, and was told by Pernell that his parents didn't want him. Later Pernell also told him his father had died. One day in 1980 when Steven was 14, Pernell brought home another little boy, Timmy White, to become his next victim of molestation. At this point, Steven took the boy, and hoping to prevent him from being molested for life like he was, he escaped and fled to a local police station where the entire story was revealed.

Eventually Steven returned to his home, and everyone was ecstatic to see he was alive and that he was back with his real family, and he was treated as a hero for saving the life of little Timmy. Steven tried his best to get on with his life but he was pretty messed up. He was teased by other children at school for being molested and eventually dropped out. Steven began to drink frequently and suppressed his true feelings, as many abuse victims do.

He was eventually kicked out of the family home and his relationship with his father remained strained. Eventually, however, he seemed to have gotten his life back on track. He married, had two children, and got a job.

This all came to an end on September 17, 1989, when Steven was riding his motorcycle home and was hit by a car driven by a tomato working who was backing out of his workplace. The man took off, and Steven was left to die. If the man had stuck around, Steven might have received medical attention earlier and lived.

Steven died an hour after being hit, and the driver who struck him turned himself in the day before the funeral.

You can read the details of the tragic life of Steven Stayner here:

To make things worse for this family, Steven's older brother Cary Stayner ended up becoming a serial killer, and was convicted of murdering four women in 1999.

Later while he was in prison, Cary Stayner would state that he felt neglected while his parents grieved over the loss of his little brother.

Tomatoes are fruit, not vegetables.

Re: The Tragic Life of Steven Stayner

I forgot to add: to make this case an ever worse tragedy, the guy who ended up taking care of Steven Stayner and his older brother (that's the brother who ended up becoming a serial killer) was a convicted molester. Stayner quite possible was saved from one child molester, only to be delivered into the hands of another one.

well, u wonder that, but u would think he would b the first to nip that shit in the bud.. i mean .. he bailed out of the kidnappin situation to save the new victim. but it would also account for his unsuccessful reconnection to his family after his rescue....

Not absolutely sure Steven was a victim, but his older brother Carl (the serial killer) claimed he was.

The uncle was murdered in 1990, a year after Steven died in the motorcycle accident. Looks like this poor family suffered one big tragedy after another.
