Titanic Behind the Scenes: 1996-97 Production at Fox Baja Studios
James Cameron filmed Titanic in 1996 and 1997, primarily at Fox Baja Studios south of Rosarito Beach in Baja California, Mexico. A near-full-scale exterior of the ship was built in the six-acre Tank One, while miniature models, tilting sets, flooded interiors and bluescreen stages were used for the sinking and shipboard sequences. Footage of the actual wreck was filmed from the Russian research vessel Akademik Mstislav Keldysh using Mir submersibles. Cameron directed Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet during the bow, rail, steerage-party, flooded-corridor and floating-panel sequences. Crews operated cameras and rigging around the tank, placed the hull on a gimbal, staged extras in cork lifejackets and prepared the grand staircase and dining saloon for flooding. Gloria Stuart, who played the older Rose, also worked with Cameron on set. The film was released in December 1997.
