Tesla Announces Full Autonomy Hardware

Full Self-Driving Capability

Build upon Enhanced Autopilot and order Full Self-Driving Capability on your Tesla. This doubles the number of active cameras from four to eight, enabling full self-driving in almost all circumstances, at what we believe will be a probability of safety at least twice as good as the average human driver. The system is designed to be able to conduct short and long distance trips with no action required by the person in the driver’s seat. For Superchargers that have automatic charge connection enabled, you will not even need to plug in your vehicle.

All you will need to do is get in and tell your car where to go. If you don’t say anything, the car will look at your calendar and take you there as the assumed destination or just home if nothing is on the calendar. Your Tesla will figure out the optimal route, navigate urban streets (even without lane markings), manage complex intersections with traffic lights, stop signs and roundabouts, and handle densely packed freeways with cars moving at high speed. When you arrive at your destination, simply step out at the entrance and your car will enter park seek mode, automatically search for a spot and park itself. A tap on your phone summons it back to you.

Models with the new self-driving capabilities will have eight cameras, rather than the four in the simpler autopilot vehicles. This will provide 360 degree visibility around the car at up to 250 metres (820 feet) of range

The enhanced suite includes 12 updated ultrasonic sensors to compliment the vision, allowing the self-driving cars to detect both hard and soft objects. Along with this, it has a forward-facing radar that can see through 'heavy rain, fog, dust and even the car ahead'

Elon Musk on Twitter;
"When searching for parking, the car reads the signs to see if it is allowed to park there, which is why it skipped the disabled spot"

"When you want your car to return, tap Summon on your phone. It will eventually find you even if you are on the other side of the country"

More Quick Info
  • Elon says this hardware is capable for Level 5.
  • Close call, but went with Nvidia for processing hardware. AMD, and then Intel, were next in line
  • Spent over a year in testing with this hardware
  • Feature set will disabled for at least first few months, predicts December 2016
  • Significant improvements will be released every ~3 months
  • Demonstration of LA to NYC by the end of 2017 without any human touch, including charging
  • Autopilot 1.0 will continue to get better, but it is fundamentally limited by hardware
  • Upgrading Hardware 1 cars will not happen, akin to a spinal transplant
  • 2.0 GPS is more accurate, minor sensor improvements on IMU and others
  • System will always be operating in shadow mode to demonstrate to regulators when computer would or wouldn't have acted in accidents
  • No way to turn it into a kit for other manufacturers, requires too much integration, not realistic
  • Heater elements around all camera surfaces to prevent snow and ice
  • Positioning of cameras is such that dust or ice accumulation is unlikely
  • Initial testing on closed track with Tesla's engineers, then alpha tested by Elon and close group of others, then goes to Early Access Program, 1,000 technically savvy customers around the world, then rolled-out in shadow mode to whole fleet, then activated

yea that accident sucked, poor guy. However he was watching movies on a portable DVD player, wasn't paying attention as he should have been which caused the accident.

Tesla has always made it explicitly clear to always watch the road and keep your hands on the steering wheel. Accidents happen and companies learn from them to improve their products.

I for one, am ready for fully autonomous vehicles

Yea, makes me salty I can't afford one. Enchanched AutoPilot is $5,000 & Full Self-Driving is $3,000. I'm sure if you can afford a Model S then $8k won't break you. But for the rest of us who aren't filthy rich, there's speculation that it'll be cheaper on the Model 3. So there's that
