Re: Tarantula The Size Of A Human Face Discovered
I'm no expert but I am a bit of an enthusiast and I really can't understand this statement: That doesn't make any sense at all, not a bit! Looking at tarantulas, or rather Theraphosidae you can basically split them into 13 subfamilies. Some of those subfamilies share strong characteristics, such as Theraphosinae and Acanthopelminae tending to have similar bulky bodies and terrestrial lifestyles and that's where the "Goliath" Theraphosa blondi belong. They are very different from Poecilotheriinae, which are more slender, much faster, more venomous and arboreal; and that the family this new species belongs to. It's a bit like finding a new chimpanzee species (in Africa) and saying "it's thought to be related to orangutans (from Indonesia)". Sure, they're both apes but they are VERY, VERY different types of apes from very different parts of the world. And with all the experts quoted in the article, I really can't fathom where that comment came from. It's completely senseless! It's like they got all this great information from Peter Kirk and Ranil Nanayakkara then decided to throw their own little 2+2=5 in there! That tarantula couldn't be more different from the T. blondi, it's a giant "Pokie"... duh! |
