the problem is if the kids survive, then who are they going to come home to? daddy's gone and a wanted man.
it reminds me of Katrina where a man was forced at gun point to leave his dog behind. (sickening!) someone had replied "the would have to shoot me." same thing. if the dog survived, you wouldn't be there for it if it survived.
of course if there is no survival then you would wish they had shot you. unfortunately you don't know at the time whether you will see your child (or dog) again alive or not.
