Stung Meanchey Garbage Dump in Cambodia: Child Scavengers in Phnom Penh
Children and adults scavenged recyclable material at the Stung Meanchey municipal dump on the outskirts of Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The site served as the capital's main garbage dump and became known as "Smoky Mountain" because of its persistent fires and smoke. It officially closed in 2009. Scavengers worked around garbage trucks as fresh loads of refuse were tipped onto the dump. Children carried collection sacks, while other workers sorted batteries, plastic and other scraps by hand. Families rested and ate among piles of garbage and tarpaulin shelters. Fires burned near people searching through the waste, sending black smoke across the site. The photographs also show young children around makeshift housing beside the dump.

In Turkey, I saw a 5 year old boy walking around with a set of bathroom scales offering to weigh you for 1 Lira (about 35p) because they have to doo everything in their power in these countries to survive & eat. Especially during winter |
