Study After Velázquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X

This is the Study after Velázquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X, painted by the great Francis Bacon in 1953, and is my favorite of his. It is 1 of 45 variations of his which were inspired by the Spanish artist Diego Velázquez magnum opus of Pope Innocent X in 1650.

I agree - it's a great stylistic study of the original work that translates some of Innocent X's storied past.

Re: Study After Velázquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X

That is fucking hilarious. It's not finished, completely out of context, and a perverted bastardization of the original, which given it's subject matter, is an appropriate change, I feel. This painting is as close as you can get to hitting someone in the face without actually laying a finger on them.
