^Well the thing with jackalopes is that they were reported so broadly, it gave merit to it, because when people in different states report the same event 100 years ago, it was almost impossable to organize a hoax like that, in actuality what the rabbits had wasn't horns, they had a virus induced papaloma growing on upper body.

The taxidermists tried to pass off frauds as real animals, lending credibility from the jackalope mythology; However the mythology was based on a real phenomenon.
So in that sense jackalopes do have place in cryptozoology, water elephants sound just as ridiculous as a rabbit with antlers, doesn't necessarily mean it isn't based on truth at some point.
