Re: Steampunk Bike Made Out of Wood

Actually, that's not a steampunk bike. It's a replica of the 1885 German, Daimler Reitwagen.

The Daimler Reitwagen, a direct precursor of the motorcycle, was designed by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach in 1885.

"Daimler had founded an experimental workshop in Cannstatt in 1882. Together with his employee Maybach they developed a compact, high-speed single-cylinder engine, patented on April 3, 1885 and called "grandfather clock engine". Weighing around 60 kilograms, the engine was relatively light its capacity was 264 cm³ and he produced about a half horsepower at 650 RPM. The small dimensions and low weight, but also gasoline power, made the grandfather clock engine ideal for mobile use."

"Daimler's and Maybach's next step was to install the engine on a vehicle. They chose a wooden bicycle with training wheels. On August 29, 1885, Daimler announced the world's first vehicle internal combustion engine patent, and on November 10 of that year, Daimler's son Paul made a three kilometres long maiden voyage from Cannstatt to Untertürkheim. With its training wheels the Reitwagen was not a true bicycle, but a direct predecessor of the motorcycle. The tires consisted of metal, and the exhaust was just under the leather seat shaped like a horse saddle. The original was destroyed by fire in 1904 - replicas are on display in the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart and in the Deutsches Museum in Munich."
