i guess that makes sense, but if they dont get used in stores and as real currency, then they're just coupons and tokens anyway in my opinion.

imo, it only become legal tender/real money once they start using it in the shops.

Instead of being given to a bank to circulate, these coins will go to companies like Downies to sell. http://www.downies.com/australia/home.asp
What makes them legal tender is the fact they can be used to buy stuff in their home country, if the owner of the coin is so inclined, but the coin is only worth its face value and not the market value.

Click the link to Downies i posted and ask them when they will be advertising them for sale. They sell to the US as well.
