The coins will be issued in November

Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Yoda are among Star Wars characters who will appear on coins that will be legal tender in the Pacific island of Niue.

A collection of four silver $2 coins costs NZ$469 (£240) while silver-plated $1 coins cost NZ$23.50 (£12) each.

All Niueans are New Zealand citizens and Queen Elizabeth II, who appears on the reverse of coins, is head of state.

Coin-issuer New Zealand Mint said they were gift products and would not be used "to go buy an ice cream with".

The first 10 silver-plated Star Wars coins will be available in November with a further 30 to be issued in the future.

A maximum of 50,000 copies of each silver-plated coin will be produced.

No more than 7,500 of each of the silver coins - which contain 1oz of the precious metal - will be produced.

In April, Niue premier Toke Talagi defended stamps celebrating the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton which featured a perforated line that split the couple.

Re: Star Wars Coins Issued in Niue (12 August 2011)

i wonder how long this currency will survive, with so few of the coins being made... i am sure there are many more star wars fanatics who'd want to collect those, than the number they're printing, they'll run out of coins unless they keep making them

would having such a collectible item as their legal tender make their economy better when people start trying to buy the currency for their collections?

That's how coin collecting works, a certain number are issued and sold. Then they are traded on the open market and their value is determined by how much people are prepaired to pay for them. Their minimum value depends on the market price for silver and the over all silver content of the coin. There is nothing new about this, Transformers, Astro Boy, Pirates of the Carribean, are just a few of the franchises that have autherised their product to turn up on a coin. I think these will sell out fast, but they would have sold out even faster if one of the coins was Slave Girl Leia in scratch and sniff!!

The first European to sight Niue was Captain James Cook in 1774.

Cook made three attempts to land on the island but was refused permission to do so by the Polynesian inhabitants.

He named the island "Savage Island" because, legend has it, the natives that "greeted" him were painted in what appeared to Cook and his crew to be blood.

However, the substance on their teeth was that of the hulahula, a native red banana.

Re: Star Wars Coins Issued in Niue (12 August 2011)

upon reflection i'm confused as the article says they're gift products and but in the starting summary of the article, it says they're legal tender, does it mean it wont be used as their currency? if not i find the aticle to be a little misleading.

They're collectables but issued as legal tender, only a real bonehead would use it as legal tender though. Their face value is only a small percentage of their value, so no these will not be found in change. Most new collectable coins made these days are legal tender but not meant for general circulation, if they were not legal tender they'd just be expensive tokens and medalions, and not worth as much.

i guess that makes sense, but if they dont get used in stores and as real currency, then they're just coupons and tokens anyway in my opinion.

imo, it only become legal tender/real money once they start using it in the shops.
