Re: Star Wars Coins Issued in Niue (12 August 2011)
i wonder how long this currency will survive, with so few of the coins being made... i am sure there are many more star wars fanatics who'd want to collect those, than the number they're printing, they'll run out of coins unless they keep making them would having such a collectible item as their legal tender make their economy better when people start trying to buy the currency for their collections? |

Re: Star Wars Coins Issued in Niue (12 August 2011)
That's how coin collecting works, a certain number are issued and sold. Then they are traded on the open market and their value is determined by how much people are prepaired to pay for them. Their minimum value depends on the market price for silver and the over all silver content of the coin. There is nothing new about this, Transformers, Astro Boy, Pirates of the Carribean, are just a few of the franchises that have autherised their product to turn up on a coin. I think these will sell out fast, but they would have sold out even faster if one of the coins was Slave Girl Leia in scratch and sniff!! |

Re: Star Wars Coins Issued in Niue (12 August 2011)
upon reflection i'm confused as the article says they're gift products and but in the starting summary of the article, it says they're legal tender, does it mean it wont be used as their currency? if not i find the aticle to be a little misleading.

Re: Star Wars Coins Issued in Niue (12 August 2011)
They're collectables but issued as legal tender, only a real bonehead would use it as legal tender though. Their face value is only a small percentage of their value, so no these will not be found in change. Most new collectable coins made these days are legal tender but not meant for general circulation, if they were not legal tender they'd just be expensive tokens and medalions, and not worth as much.

Re: Star Wars Coins Issued in Niue (12 August 2011)
i guess that makes sense, but if they dont get used in stores and as real currency, then they're just coupons and tokens anyway in my opinion. imo, it only become legal tender/real money once they start using it in the shops. |
