St Georges County Lunatic Asylum, Stafford, UK

Designed by architect Joseph Potter the Staffordshire County Asylum was opened in 1818 and housed in excess of 1,000 patients. The elegant red brick façade expands over 350 metres in length overlooking the town of Stafford from an elevated vantage point on a hill.

During the 1950's the Asylum was renamed St George's Hospital. Suicide cages were erected in the stairwells after a female patient threw herself off from the fourth floor and landed nearby reception.

As the hospital was closed in 1995, 145 long term patients who had lived at the asylum most of their lives were re-located into the surrounding 'community'. The long abandoned hospital has been left to decay for over 20 years and has severely suffered at the hands of vandals.
Noticed the only thing not damaged by the vandals is that toilet.

Shame how trashed this place is but that's what 20 years of vandalism amounts too.

I spent three years in the state prison where I'm from, and inside the walls was a place just like this where they did lobotomies on mental patients back in the day.. It was preserved though.. Nice pics

Re: St Georges County Lunatic Asylum, Stafford, UK

I lived in stafford for 30 years or so, still have a house there and visited last month. Part of St George's is still in use, part is being demolished and new houses being built.

In its day it was the biggest loony bin in the country. When I was a teenager, in the 70's, quite a few of the nurses I knew worked in there, when it was fully open. They still did electro convulsive therapy until the mid eighties!
