Skulls & Bones Found in Dictator Alfredo Stroessner 'house of Horror'
A group of families, who since last month occupy one of the residences that were of the dictator Alfredo Stroessner, near the Paraguayan city of Ciudad del Este, denounced the discovery of human remains under the floor of the bathroom. The finding was verified by the Prosecutor's Office, which requested the collaboration of the National Team for the investigation, search and identification of detained and disappeared persons during the Stroessner dictatorship, between 1954 and 1989 (Enabi), as well as the help of the criminalistics personnel of the National Police. The bones and skulls were found by the families that occupied the house since the end of August. The authorities were responsible for cordoning off the place to protect the bones until the arrival of the experts to study and determine the origin of these remains and if they correspond to victims of the dictatorship. Video shows skulls and other bones hidden in rubble, which could have been buried for several years, according to the statements collected by the Paraguayan press. The president of the Commission on the Disappeared of Paraguay, Rogelio Agustín Goiburú, told a local channel that "people have long talked about the building occupied as the 'house of horror'. Under his regime, 20,814 people were forced into exile and 425 disappeared or were executed , according to a report from the Truth and Justice Commission. Paraguay has only recovered 37 bodies of the disappeared in that period, of which the Directorate of Historical Memory and Reparation (DMHR) has only managed to identify four. |
