Sketches of Hell by Kyosai (1870s)

Prolific Meiji-period artist Kawanabe Ky?sai (1831-1889), well-known in the West for his darkly humorous illustrations, was commissioned by Scottish surgeon and Japanese art collector William Anderson (1842-1900) to produce a large number of comic paintings in the 1870s. Anderson’s collection, which today forms the core of the Japanese paintings at the British Museum, included the handful of fanciful depictions of hell shown below.

Re: Sketches of Hell by Kyosai (1870s)

lame shit. So, logistically, which is a thing people can rarely imagine as they ponder things, hell has a textile industry and steel-making? I'm curious if the mice were able to keep that big cat tied up or if the cat got away and made hell unsafe for everyone. And who made the big blue gloryhole box?

Re: Sketches of Hell by Kyosai (1870s)

I think they made a video game where demons based on these paintings attack Japan.

It was a Capcom game, I remember that much.
