Ship Breaking - Bangladesh

A mix of my personal stuff with some you all have seen in National Geographic and other publications. I was there working to improve the heavy metal abatement procedures on the workers when the photographers came through. I won't spout off on the heart story - just though you all would appreciate the scale of these ships on land being broken down by hand.

The one with the smoke is a quick one someone shot off a phone. Eight dead and another 35 injured when a worker cutting a floor ignited fumes drawn into the ventilation system from elsewhere in the aft portion. Took us almost three days to finally account for everyone.

Re: Ship Breaking - Bangladesh

Forgot one. This little guys is 17 and came with hopes of working in a hotel. What's behind him is a siphoning and dividing wall in side a super tanker. It goes on up another 15 decks (~120 feet). He was a great help in the off hours as an advanced interpreter (Chittagong has its own dialect and accent). Jalaal Mia, or Mr. Jalaal, was his name.

Re: Ship Breaking - Bangladesh

Damn, they use gas axes and wear loin clothes to cut massive ships up. Life is just so cheap in some locales.

Re: Ship Breaking - Bangladesh

Great pictures, sad way of breaking up ships though. Watching them run the vessels aground, is quite the rush as well.

Very cool. The ships are so incredibly huge, aren't they.
