Shark Encounters

I was raised on the ocean and have been SCUBA diving since the 1980s. Like all those I’ve ever known who live, work or just enjoy the ocean sharks have always been something that are on my mind when around the water. I am a child of the 70s and Jaws made an impact on my imagination. Attitudes were much different then and almost no one was interested learning the truth about sharks. The attitude then was if it is dangerous to humans just wipe it out, problem solved. I saw my first shark in Magens Bay on my home island of St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands when I was thirteen. She was a black tip shark about four feet long and was suddenly next to me out of nowhere and was gone almost as fast. This encounter only encouraged my imagination and I started my journey in to learning everything I could about sharks.

Did you know the most dangerous shark in the world is actually the Oceanic White Tip? It’s true. Your odds of ever seeing one are almost none because they prefer deep water and almost never come in to the shallows.

Over the past three decades I balanced my career with my love for the ocean and everything it has to offer especially sharks. I have earned my IDIA Master Scuba Instructor certification, PADI Scuba Instructor certification, SSI Instructor certification. I have been fortunate enough to cage dive with Great Whites in South Africa and the Guadalupe Islands, with Tiger sharks at Tiger Beach Bahamas, I’ve witnessed the Hammerhead migration in the Gulf of Mexico as well as multiple dives with whale sharks. In my free time I volunteer tagging sharks and recording information on sharks we catch that were previously tagged.

Did you know some shark species are omnivores? It’s true. Bonnet and hammerhead sharks eat sea grass.

There are over 500 hundred species of sharks in the world’s waters from the sixty foot whale shark to the nine inch pocket shark there are a lot of sharks to appreciate and learn about. Most shark species are completely safe to be in the water with and many live in areas of the ocean where humans just can’t go. Occasionally the handful of dangerous sharks and humans do come in to contact with each other although the vast majority of the time the humans never know it. Unfortunately every now and again that close contact ends in catastrophe. I have compiled a few images of negative shark encounters ranging from simple bites to all out carnage and am working on a couple videos for this thread. I will provide information about the type of shark involved in the encounter along with other general information. If you have any questions I will do my best to provide accurate answers.

Did you know sharks are not attracted to human blood…… but they are attracted to human urine? It’s true.

I hope you all enjoy this thread, I enjoy sharing this passion that I have.

Re: Shark Encounters

Young man being removed from a Tiger shark. Tigers are one of the only sharks known to actually consume people. There have been several attacks where the shark has shown predation.

Re: Shark Encounters

Or here are some I find scary.
Especially the spear fisher ones. They collect some of the craziest footage of sharks. I would have been sTEVing myself badly through all of these though.

Yyyyeeeaaahhh fffffffuuuuuuck that. Look I spear fish back home. We don’t have to deal with sharks to often but when the landlord is in the house you have to pay the rent. Shark show up and want the fish give him the fish. I absolutely don’t spearfish anywhere else especially Florida or the gulf coast. Here are a few pics I’ve taken on different dives. You had asked if i had any shark pics. These were in the Bahamas mostly out of Bimini.

Oh shit, no way. See, I wouldn't be able to handle getting that near to a Hammerhead or a Tiger Shark--that thing is just huge too.

I've spear fished once, but in a lake. For Pike, the only threats were leaches, and horseflies when you raised your head to clear your CO2.
My ex-girlfriend lives in Japan, and she scuba dove with Manta Rays in Okinawa--at night. I don't even like swimming pools at night.

You know Chris--the owner of DR lives in Florida and boats around in the Bahamas a bunch. He posted a video of him flying a drone around in some Everglade, mangrove looking area a while ago in the member photo section.

You can add photos with the paper clip and centre them with the format tools.

And then inject them in between text. They show up expanded too. If you quote this after, you'll see what it looks like. You don't see the actual photo until you submit reply.

I've never even seen a shark in the Ocean. I live in BC on an Island, so I see a lot of cool marine shit, but our water is almost black, it's deep as hell everywhere, and there is rarely any sand. Barnacles, seaweed, otters, seals, whales, and sometimes dolphins play in the wake of the ferries we ride around.

Re: Shark Encounters

We have only a few types of sharks here. We have these--called Salmon Sharks. They really look like miniture Great White Sharks when they are babies.
The first video is from the Island where I live.

It's funny how long that thing survived in the trunk of his car. I know that ride, it must be 15 or 20 minutes.
