The Self Immolation of a Monk
On June 16, 1963, Buddhist monk Thich Quang Duc immolated himself in downtown Saigon. Quang Duc was actually protesting religious persecution under the Diem regime. After his death, his body was re-cremated, but his heart remained intact. This was interpreted as a symbol of compassion and led Buddhists to revere him as a bodhisattva, heightening the impact of his death on the public psyche.

There was no filming of this death. This is a re-enactment for a movie. Sorry, guys, but you can look this up. There are real photos taken at the time, yes, but NO filming. It is an excellent job of re-enactment, however. |
