Seal Makes Jaw-dropping Escape from Shark
A seal’s life hangs in the balance as it rests on the end of the nose of a great white shark – before making an amazing escape. The mammal was surprised by one the predators before managing to perch itself just above rows of razor-sharp teeth. An escape route emerges as the shark leans to the side and the seal manages to swim away. The near-death battle was captured by Irish photographer David ‘Baz’ Jenkins.  He was on a tour off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa. Mr Jenkins, 41, said: ‘The seals were making their way back to Seal Island after feeding out at sea and the sharks travel below them. ‘The sharks are really well camouflaged due to their dark backs and when the seal looks down it is hard to make out the shark below.’  Great whites measure up to 6m (20ft) can ‘explode from below without warning’ at speeds of up to 25mph. ‘The speed and agility just takes your breath away as they can explode from below without warning. ‘This seal was one lucky pup,’ added Mr Jenkins.  |
