Scolopendra gigantea Bat Predation at Cueva del Guano, Venezuela: 2005 Study
A 2005 study documented Scolopendra gigantea preying on bats at Cueva del Guano on the Paraguaná Peninsula in northwestern Venezuela. The giant centipedes climbed the cave walls and ceilings, where they caught flying or perching bats and subdued prey substantially heavier than themselves. The recorded prey included Mormoops megalophylla, Pteronotus davyi and Leptonycteris curasoae. Scolopendra gigantea, commonly called the Amazonian or Peruvian giant centipede, is the world's largest centipede species and often reaches more than 25 centimeters in length. ![]() ![]() |
