Salvation Mountain

While living in California, I had the chance to visit Salvation Mountain. I am not a religious person, so for myself this was more about the amazing creation this man named Leonard Knight has put together.

Beautiful and stunning are understatements! I have many videos of Leonard Knight from our visits, he is an interesting character!

Information:

Located just east of the entrance to Slab City
http://www.documentingreality.com/fo...ab-city-137861
and a mile from East Jesus
http://www.documentingreality.com/fo...esus-ca-137874
is the easily recognizable and colorful Salvation Mountain. A small hill approximately three stories high which is entirely covered in acrylic paint, concrete and adobe. Bursting with Bible verses, this has been an ongoing project of over twenty five years by Leonard Knight.

Leonard Knight (born 1931) a Christian hermit from Vermont, moved out to the area decades ago and began building a mountain out of straw bales, clay and paint. *He became driven about sharing God's love, even though for years he drew no one's attention. *Eventually, the unusual creation attracted a steady stream of onlookers and fans

The mountain is called Salvation Mountain and it has taken 25 years of hard labor, endless buckets of adobe clay, 100,000+ gallons of paint, 1000s of hay bales and one man with unwavering faith to build a mountain. This mountain has earned the recognition of The Discovery Channel, Ripley’s Believe It or Not and National Geographic. It is not an ordinary mountain and the man who built it is not an ordinary man.

In 2010 his hearing and eyesight began to fail, forcing him to leave his beloved Salvation Mountain. In December of 2011, additional health problems caused his move to a caregiver facility east of San Diego, CA.*

He tries to visit the Mountain every few months when possible.

Salivation Mountain is now being cared for by a non-profit group, Salvation Mountain Inc. It has hired a caretaker to maintain the site, and to protect it from vandals and thieves. The desert's natural elements, rain, wind, and heat, create the need for constant maintenance of Leonard Knight's Salvation Mountain.

If you get a chance to visit this remarkable place, please do. You won't regret it!

The last photo is of Leonard on his mountain!
