Salpa Maggiore Caught Off Karikari Peninsula, New Zealand, Jan. 2014
Stewart Fraser hooked a transparent, barrel-shaped salp while fishing with his sons in the Pacific about 65 to 70 kilometers north of the Karikari Peninsula in New Zealand in January 2014. The animal had a small orange mass visible inside its otherwise clear body.

The National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, UK, identified the animal as Salpa maggiore, or Salpa maxima. Salps are free-swimming tunicates, also known as pelagic sea squirts, rather than fish or shrimp. They occur worldwide and can form chains more than 30 feet long. NIWA's Dennis Gordon also identified the animal as a salp and said it was not especially unusual. One photograph shows the specimen held in a hand above the open sea. Additional photographs show other individual salps and a salp chain near a snorkeler.
