Russia - Removing Massive Iron Lump After Blast Furnace Malfunction

"How many BelAZ trucks were needed to extract the technological oversize from the blast furnace? The immortal specialists of the West Siberian Metallurgical Plant answer, who are not afraid of broken cables.
PS BelAZ trucks pull tons of "goat" - smelting that has cooled down due to a malfunction of the furnace. This is a hefty piece of melted iron, which is almost impossible to melt again."

Cool. So wouldn’t there be a way to cut it up into pieces that are useable? That’s a big chunk of metal…

Re: Russia - Removing Massive Iron Lump After Blast Furnace Malfunction

Yeah i don't understand why it's "almost impossible to melt".
It's probably not impossible to melt. They'll probably truck the lump back to the upper level of the foundry and put it back in a crucible. Most modern industrial furnaces are induction furnaces, which means that would be melted in an hour at most. They probably had a power interruption and that shut down the melting process.

Metal that I melt in my small furnace takes 30-40 minutes. If I had an induction furnace, it would be 3-4 minutes to melting temperature, and totally silent except for the electrical hum. But my small gas furnace cost me $800, whereas the same size induction furnace would cost about $70,000. I know that because I talked to the man who started the "Inductotherm Corporation" when he brought his Learjet in to be serviced. He's the guy who invented the modern induction furnace, and he had 80 or 90 other patents as well. But you have to have a big supply of electricity, at very low prices, which is NOT the situation in Tucson. So a small induction furnace is not in my future.

Which is too fucking bad. They are amazing. And since there is no combustion going on, the metal stays very clean. You put the metal in, turn it on, and watch it start to glow red and then collapse in a puddle in the bottom of the crucible.
