Robot Insect Spies
These tiny robot insects look like they could be toys - but they are sophisticated spying tools. The miniature drones developed for the military are based on insects and birds and are aimed at tracking and targeting enemies in city areas. They are propelled like tiny helicopters and can settle outside buildings to observe their surroundings. They will also carry sensors, receivers, power supplies and a camera. One animation shows a robot pigeon watching targets from atop a power cable. Some of the robots are as small as 6in and will be able to fly, hover and navigate through urban areas while gathering intelligence. Researchers led by Dr Gregory Parker are studying hummingbirds and dragonflies to hone their invention at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, US. |
