I watched this on the early morning news not too long after it happened in unedited 16mm news footage (during the era of the Vietnam War so uncensored stuff this grim was common on the news back then). I had to go to school and the atmosphere was very glum that day in class. My first-grade teacher asked us all to say a little prayer for him because he hadn't died yet. My sister had a scrapbook of all his newspaper clippings because she had a crush on him by the time he announced his candidacy. I don't remember her reaction to his shooting, just my own haunted, dark mood.
