Iconic, yes. a technological marvel, no doubt. economically viable? Absolutely not! it never was and it only got worse as the price of fuel went up. The crash was just a nail in the coffin it wasn't even a problem with the Concorde that caused the crash it was debris on the runway but the planes days were numbered already.

NYC airport authority's tried to ban due to its noise. I wouldn't be surprised if their was a level of opposition by Boeing.

Re: The REAL Story About the Crash That Killed Concorde! | Air France Flight 4590
Boeing had designs to build an even larger version called the SST but the development and implementation of the Concorde proved what everyone suspected, that it was not financially viable. And if you can't fly supersonic over land because of the sonic booms what use is a plane like that? Oceanic routes only and only departing from cities on the coast is kind of pointless. There's a big push now for supersonic transport that doesn't generate a sonic boom and while the technology is there to make it possible nothing is being said about the economic viability. Even engine manufacturers who signed on to develop these engines and realized it's a fools errand and have started backing out of the projects. The only reason the Concorde ever existed is because you had two government backed airlines pouring massive amounts of money into it. Air France and British Airways. |
