Real Hobbit House in Chester County, Pennsylvania, Built in 2004
A 600-square-foot stone cottage known as the Hobbit house was built in 2004 on Vince Donovan's rural Chester County property, about 50 miles northwest of Philadelphia. Architect Peter Archer designed it as a private retreat and repository for Donovan's collection of rare books and Tolkien memorabilia, including pipes, swords, figurines and chess sets. The cottage has stone walls, a curved roof, a chimney and a 54-inch round door made from Spanish cedar. The door hangs from a single hand-forged hinge made by Maryland blacksmith Matt Harris. Inside are a timber-beamed great room, a fireplace, rugs, bookshelves and Tolkien-themed displays. The building cost $150,000 and has no bathroom, kitchen or plumbing.
