Re: Rare Footage Of The Funeral Of Stan Laurel
I like Laurel and Hardy best because they actually were good friends as well as co-workers. Abbot and Costello hated each other, and never talked after their careers ended. Also, an interesting note is that Stan Laurel kept his name in the Los Angeles phone book until he died, due to his feeling that any fans that wanted to talk to him should be able to call him up. He would answer the phone at his house and talk to anyone who called him. I can't imagine anyone in Hollywood today being that open or willing to chat with fans. Both Stan Laurel and Babe Hardy were genuinely nice people, in spite of their fame. |

Re: Rare Footage Of The Funeral Of Stan Laurel
Just minutes away from death, Laurel told his nurse he would not mind going skiing right at that very moment. Somewhat taken aback, the nurse replied that she was not aware that he was a skier. "I'm not," said Laurel, "I'd rather be doing that than this!" A few minutes later the nurse looked in on him again and found that he had died quietly in his armchair. ************************************ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stan_Laurel |

Re: Rare Footage Of The Funeral Of Stan Laurel
It's not fair to say Abbot and Costello hated each other and never talked again, like most close partnerships they had disagreements and while it's true that a rift developed, the most serious one was ostensibly because Abbott hired a domestic who had been fired by Costello and this angered him greatly, but Abbott claims it was resolved when he volunteered to help with Costello's charity for underprivileged children, and suggested naming it the Lou Costello Jr. Youth Foundation. and a year after Lou Costello died, Abbott tried to launch a comeback with Candy Candido, but Bud eventually gave it up, saying, "No one could ever live up to Lou." If you really want to look at a partnership that got really ugly, Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis were estranged for years. But to your point Laurel and Hardy were wonderful gentlemen and Stan Laurel was a funny, gentle soul. When he was dying in the hospital, reported his last words went something like this: Just minutes away from death, Laurel told his nurse he would not mind going skiing right at that very moment. Somewhat taken aback, the nurse replied that she was not aware that he was a skier. "I'm not," said Laurel, "I'd rather be doing that than this!" |
