Pronghorn Skulls With Horn Sheaths and Exposed Bony Cores

The pronghorn, Antilocapra americana, is the only living member of the family Antilocapridae. It is neither a deer nor a true antelope. Its horns consist of permanent bony cores covered by keratin sheaths. Male pronghorn shed and regrow those sheaths each year, while shedding by females is less regular. Pronghorn are the only living animals known to shed their horn sheaths.

Two cleaned, bleached pronghorn skulls demonstrate the anatomy. The left skull retains its dark, curved sheaths and forward-pointing prongs. The sheaths have been removed from the right skull, exposing the short, white, flattened bony cores beneath them.

Re: Pronghorn Skulls With Horn Sheaths and Exposed Bony Cores

A western US deer. I had a friend who used to track pronghorn herds across the wilds (for science, not to hunt). He gave me my first Stetson. Eventually Jesus appeared to him in a pickup truck, and then he went crazy. My friend, not Jesus.
