Presentism
This where we have discussions on History. One thing that's rarely debated is historical judgement of the past with the moral conventions and sensibilities of today's society. The implications are enormous nowadays. Never before has social engineering changed public perceptions sometimes in as much as a few years and political correctnes enforces a group herd response? In my lifetime, things such as smoking, temperance, and gay rights awareness were turned completely around, sometime within a decade like smoking. Younger people have little tradition to carry on nowadays. Our laws, technology, moral panics rapidly change what a generation in a few short years will tolerate. Often, those still alive and were previously venerated or were memoralized in the past are judged. Statute of limitations and ex-post-facto laws to some degree insulate the living. Yet, their reputations and future aspirations are destroyed. I can think of a lot of things that have changed and people who were ruined or in some situations criminally charged over what was once acceptable or tolerated. I thought this would be a good topic to throw out and see if it sticks. |
