Re: The Place of Sea Turtle Dead
I remember seeing this in a documentary made by an Australian couple of marine ecologists but cannot remember their names or when it was made (1970's at a guess). I think they where the ones who got a marine reserve made in Sydney as the found the massive Potato Cod there and they where in great danger of being wiped out. They where also great campaigners back then for the barrier reef conservation areas and also for the protection of sharks. They (through film) showed that the sharks where not the great terrors of the sea everyone thought they where. They found these turtles upended by the vertical drop they had to face on returning to the sea on a small (private?) island and suggested that the drop mat have been dug out my man, thus making it a man made crime against these endangered marine animals. They could not investigate it any further as they where legally blocked from going to the island again..... More useless info from this crazy gaggle of information gathered within this frazzled head of mine! I will have one more hunt to see if I can find out who they where as I have failed miserably so far... |

Re: The Place of Sea Turtle Dead
I went I searched and I discovered.... These pictures are stills from a film/documentary made by Ron & Valerie Taylor the great advocates for the marine reserves around Australia. They also championed the protection of the Potato Cod, sharks (especially the Great White) and turtles. They also campaigned against the mining operations on the outlying coral islands where these pictures where taken. It was thought the drop the turtles went over and landed on their backs was man made as it was also the right height to "flip" the turtles onto their backs when they tried to climb it to get to the ancient egg laying beaches. If the turtles where there the companies couldnt mine.... The company who was mining this island successfully got an injunction stopping the couple filming there again (they where in fact prohibited from approaching the island by boat for some distance). Sadly Ron Taylor Passed away on 9th Sept 2012. [Australian marine conservation pioneer and renowned shark expert Ron Taylor has died at the age of 78. Mr Taylor suffered myeloid leukaemia for two years and died peacefully on Sunday morning at a private hospital near his Sydney home]. |
