Piranha, Electric Eel and 11 Other Animals in Freshwater Gallery
A 13-animal gallery surveys predators and other creatures associated with rivers, lakes and wetlands around the world. The collection includes a piranha, electric eel, goliath birdeater, tigerfish, Nile crocodile, northern snakehead, mata mata turtle, diving bell spider, anaconda, freshwater stingray, payara and candiru. One archival photograph shows Elektra, an electric eel displayed at the 1939 New York World's Fair. Another shows a year-old Nile crocodile snapping at a tree frog in South Africa's St. Lucia Estuary. Divers in the Great Lake at Östersund, Sweden, pose with a model European catfish rather than a live specimen. Other photographs show a payara at a market in Pevas, Peru, a close view of a tigerfish's teeth and seven men holding a snake described as a 19-foot anaconda at zoological gardens. The collection also includes a terrestrial goliath birdeater, so not every animal shown is strictly a freshwater species. |

Re: Piranha, Electric Eel and 11 Other Animals in Freshwater Gallery
![]() Holey The biggest saltwater crocodile (they live in freshwater, by the way) that I've ever seen. That picture does not do him (I think it was male) justice. I'd say just a touch under 5 metres long, and just straight up huge. When we first saw it, it took a moment to realise that it was real and not just one of those big-ass statues they put out the front for kids to get photos with. |
